IBM Copy a Volume Group
Hi:

I have an aix lpar with a vgroup that has 12 disks for a total of 1.9 TB assign and i want to move that data to a new vgroup on the same machine that has (6) disks for a total of 2.5 TB.

What would be the best way to copy the actual vg with (12) disks to the new vg with (6) disks? We need to maintain the same mounting points so the new vg will be varyon and file sytems mounted and the actual then will be varyoff if we need to go back.

I will appreciate any help and information.

Make the new disks part of the existing volume group, then create mirror copies of the LVs using the "mklvcopy" command. The LVM will do the copying for you.

Don't forget to set the quorum so that the part of the VG you intend to use later is still recognized as usable part of a VG.

Thanks for your response and following your recomendation do i need then at the end of the mirror copies delete the original one?

We are planning to do this to move to faster disks just available on the lpar thru VIO etc. and after that we want to remove the older disks and put them available for the IBM SAN to used them on other partitions if needed.

I need to check and validate in the system to see if they are lv's spread in more than one disk right now.

I found on the IBM website to use the following example:

Parameters Explanation:

(-e m)
To use minimum inter-disk allocation policy

(-s y)
To strictly allocate mirror copies on separate physical volumes

(-k)
To synchronize new copies immediately

datalv
The name of the logical volume where you want to start a mirroring operation

The number of copies that you want to make of the data (a maximum of 3)

hdisk3 and hdisk7
The physical volumes where the logical volume resides

hdisk3
The physical volume that already holds the data of logical volume datalv.

hdisk7
The physical volume that will hold the mirror copy and where you want to move the data

Do you think this should do it? What about an exportvg (actual) and importvg (new one) will these be a more harder way to do it?
