grub-probe -- Probe device information for a given path.
SYNOPSIS
grub-probe [-m | --device-map=FILE]
[-t | --target=(fs|fs_uuid|fs_label|drive|device|partmap|
abstraction|cryptodisk_uuid|
msdos_parttype)]
[-v | --verbose] (PATH|DEVICE)
DESCRIPTION
grub-probe probes a path or device for filesystem and related information.
OPTIONS --device
Final option represents a DEVICE, rather than a filesystem PATH.
--device-map=FILE
Use FILE as the device map. The default value is /boot/grub/device.map.
--target=(fs|fs_uuid|fs_label|drive|device|partmap|msdos_parttype)
Select among various output definitions. The default is fs.

grub-setup - set up a device to boot using GRUB
SYNOPSIS
grub-setup [OPTION...] DEVICE
DESCRIPTION
Set up images to boot from DEVICE.
You should not normally run this program directly. Use grub-install instead.
-a, --allow-floppy
Make the drive also bootable as floppy (default for fdX devices). May break on some BIOSes.
-b, --boot-image=FILE
Use FILE as the boot image [default=boot.img]
-c, --core-image=FILE
Use FILE as the core image [default=core.img]
-d, --directory=DIR
Use GRUB files in the directory DIR [default=/boot/grub]
-f, --force
Install even if problems are detected
-m, --device-map=FILE
Use FILE as the device map [default=/boot/grub/device.map]
-r, --root-device=DEV
Use DEV as the root device [default=guessed]
-s, --skip-fs-probe
Do not probe for filesystems in DEVICE
-v, --verbose
Print verbose messages.
-?, --help
give this help list
--usage
give a short usage message
-V, --version
print program version
Mandatory or optional arguments to long options are also mandatory or optional for any corresponding short options.
DEVICE must be an OS device (e.g. /dev/sda).

Trying to get my unix system to recognize an optical drive, it was delivered to us, so we assumed it worked, in the 2 years since no one ever has used it, we want to now. i have 2 hard drive on my system, running suse 8. one drive is being used, and the other is a vfat drive with only mp3's on it. i am almost out of room on my first drive, i want to move my /home and /bin to hdb which is pretty much unused, ok anyway, can i just copy /home and /bin to hdb mounted as... On a HP-UX box, I can execute the sar command which will give me the device, %busy, etc. I would like to know how to take a given device name and determine on which filesystem it's located when I do a bdf.

We have AIX box with a share.
We have a Windows 2000 server with a mapped drive to this share.
We were able to create and delete files inside the mapped drive.
I removed the map. Changed it to a test share. Removed that map. Added it back to teh original share.

I have a usb external drive with two partitions sdb1 ntfs and sdb2 ext3 with label Linux
I copied a knoppix live distro in the second partition, then I installed grub on the drive. Now in the directory /media/sdb2/boot/grub i have the file device.map with the following content:

Here is some of the setup information on system:
Tru64 UNIX OS and Two Hard Drives installed. One drive is boot drive and other is spare (Spare drive currently has some back up information on it). here is just a couple of the device/partition/mount points on boot drive.
