PLSCOMPRESSION(3plplot) PLplot API PLSCOMPRESSION(3plplot)NAME
plscompression - Set device-compression level
SYNOPSIS
plscompression(compression)
DESCRIPTION
Set device-compression level. Only used for drivers that provide compression. This function, if used, should be invoked before a call to
plinit(3plplot).
Redacted form: plscompression(compression)
This function is used in example 31.
ARGUMENTS
compression (PLINT, input)
The desired compression level. This is a device-dependent value. Currently only the jpeg and png devices use these values. For jpeg
value is the jpeg quality which should normally be in the range 0-95. Higher values denote higher quality and hence larger image
sizes. For png values are in the range -1 to 99. Values of 0-9 are taken as the compression level for zlib. A value of -1 denotes
the default zlib compression level. Values in the range 10-99 are divided by 10 and then used as the zlib compression level.
Higher compression levels correspond to greater compression and small file sizes at the expense of more computation.

plsxax - Set x axis parameters
SYNOPSIS
plsxax(digmax, digits)
DESCRIPTION
Sets values of the digmax and digits flags for the x axis. See the PLplot documentation for more information.
Redacted form: plsxax(digmax, digits)
This function is used in example 31.
ARGUMENTS
digmax (PLINT, input)
Variable to set the maximum number of digits for the x axis. If nonzero, the printed label will be switched to a floating point
representation when the number of digits exceeds digmax.
digits (PLINT, input)
Field digits value. Currently, changing its value here has no effect since it is set only by plbox(3plplot) or plbox3(3plplot).
However, the user may obtain its value after a call to either of these functions by calling plgxax(3plplot).

I've noticed bzip2 gives a little bit better compression than gzip. So...I'm curious...what's gives the best compression out of all the compression utilities?
Thanks! (6 Replies)
I have heard that bz2 compression a relatively new compression encoding algorithm, far superior to tar and gz. I also remember that I downloaded a FreeBSD LiveCD a while back that was only a couple hundred megs instead of the usual 650ish using bz2 - big difference, I'd say. But to the point, what... Hi.
I'm working on a project for a class, and there's one part of the project that is confusing me.
It's a compression and decompression project, and after we write our code for compression, we need to write to standard error.

Hi everyone,
Just interested to know everyones opinions on the fastest unix compression utility with okejish compression (doesnt have to have awsome compression). I know of gzip bzip2 (sucks lol) and a couple of others but what is a great one for compression large amounts of data that wont eat... (8 Replies)
Is there a GNU Tar available with compression option available for AIX 4.2 that I can directly use (not having to compile anything, simple installation) ? (1 Reply)
Hello everyone
I want to use compression in my tape when I backup some file. For example I have several files that use 50gb. If I backup this I need to use two cartridge because without compression I can backup 36gb.
My question is with flag I need to use to compress and I can use 72gb in... (2 Replies)
Hi,
I'm looking to check the compression ratio applied by hardware to work out how much free space we have on tapes.
mt -f /dev/rmt0 status shows:
If I add up the output of the du command and what we backup from the script, it gives me the total space we tape up. So the plan was to find the... (4 Replies)
Hi all,
I am working on a sample backup code, where i read the files per 7200 bytes and send it to server. Before sending to server, i compress each 7200 bytes using zlib compression algorithm using dictionary max length of 1.5 MB . I find zlib is slow.
Can anyone recommend me a... (3 Replies)
