Please clarify me on:
a) How to use 'last' command to list users logged in during past few days. For example if i want to get the list of users logged in (and might be logged out after some time) from 15th Dec 2006 to 14th April 2007.

d) Which is the best option to use 'finger' or 'last' command to get details of the users logged in a specified duration?

For the first one, you could use grep to find the first line number where the 15th December date appears and then use sed to print everything from that line onwards.
For the details of users that logged on in a specific duration, the problem is very similar to the one above, so using last seems to be the way to go.

last, lastb - indicate last logins of users and ttys

example:
To list all user id login successfully
# last

To list all user id failed login
# lastb

To list all ip address
# last -R
or
# lastb -R

..msgm
