PROLOG

       This  manual page is part of the POSIX Programmer's Manual.  The Linux implementation of this interface may differ (consult the correspond-

NAME

       towlower, towlower_l -- transliterate uppercase wide-character code to lowercase

SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION

       For towlower(): The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the ISO C standard. Any conflict  between  the  require-
       ments described here and the ISO C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1-2008 defers to the ISO C standard.

       The  towlower()	and  towlower_l() functions have as a domain a type wint_t, the value of which the application shall ensure is a character
       representable as a wchar_t, and a wide-character code corresponding to a valid character in the current locale or the value  of	WEOF.	If
       the  argument  has any other value, the behavior is undefined.  If the argument of towlower() or towlower_l() represents an uppercase wide-
       character code, and there exists a corresponding lowercase wide-character code as defined by character  type  information  in  the  current
       locale or in the locale represented by locale, respectively (category LC_CTYPE), the result shall be the corresponding lowercase wide-char-
       acter code.  All other arguments in the domain are returned unchanged.

       The behavior is undefined if the locale argument to towlower_l() is the special locale object LC_GLOBAL_LOCALE or is  not  a  valid  locale
       object handle.

RETURN VALUE

       Upon  successful  completion,  the  towlower()  and  towlower_l() functions shall return the lowercase letter corresponding to the argument
       passed; otherwise, they shall return the argument unchanged.

       towlower, towlower_l - convert a wide character to lowercase

       towlower_l():
	   Since glibc 2.10:
		  _XOPEN_SOURCE >= 700
	   Before glibc 2.10:

DESCRIPTION

       The  towlower()	function  is  the  wide-character  equivalent of the tolower(3) function.  If wc is an uppercase wide character, and there
       exists a lowercase equivalent in the current locale, it returns the lowercase equivalent of  wc.   In  all  other  cases,  wc  is  returned
       unchanged.

       The  towlower_l() function performs the same task, but performs the conversion based on the character type information in the locale speci-
       fied by locale.	The behavior of towlower_l() is undefined if locale is the special locale object LC_GLOBAL_LOCALE (see duplocale(3)) or is
       not a valid locale object handle.

       The argument wc must be representable as a wchar_t and be a valid character in the locale or be the value WEOF.

RETURN VALUE

       If wc was convertible to lowercase, towlower() returns its lowercase equivalent; otherwise it returns wc.

VERSIONS

       The towlower_l() function first appeared in glibc 2.3.

CONFORMING TO

       towlower(): C99, POSIX.1-2001 (XSI); present as an XSI extension in POSIX.1-2008, but marked obsolete.

       towlower_l(): POSIX.1-2008.

NOTES

       The behavior of these functions depends on the LC_CTYPE category of the locale.

       These  functions  are  not  very appropriate for dealing with Unicode characters, because Unicode knows about three cases: upper, lower and
       title case.
