chpasswd - change user passwords in batch
SYNOPSIS
chpasswd [-D binddn] [-P path] [-c des|md5|blowfish | -e] [file]
DESCRIPTION
chpasswd changes passwords for user accounts in batch. It reads a list of login and password pairs from standard input or a file and uses
this information to update the passwords of this user accounts. The named account must exist and the password age will be updated. Each
input line is of the format:
user_name:password
If the hash algorithmus is not given on the commandline, the value of GROUP_CRYPT or, if not specified, CRYPT from /etc/default/passwd is
used as hash algorithmus. If not configured, the traditinal des algorithmus is used.
OPTIONS -c des|md5|blowfish
This option specifies the hash algorithmus, which should be used to encrypt the passwords.
-e The passwords are expected to be in encrypted form. Normally the passwords are expected to be cleartext.
-D, --binddn binddn
Use the Distinguished Name binddn to bind to the LDAP directory. The user will be prompted for a password for simple authentica-
tion.
-P, --path path
The passwd and shadow files are located below the specified directory path. chpasswd will use this files, not /etc/passwd and
/etc/shadow.

gpasswd changes passwords for group accounts. Only an administrator may change the password for any group. The used hash algorithmus is

-l A system administrator can lock the password of the specified group.
-u A system administrator can unlock the password of the specified group, if the group is not passwordless afterwards (it will not

How would i compare the /etc/passwd file to a file on who is logged on at a snapshot of time. So if there is 15 people on and i have 300 names and passwords, i only want to see if those 15 people are legit, if not i want to see who isnt, i tried to use diff and comm but i think the file might be... I would like to enforce the users to use 15 character passwords. I have edited the /etc/default/passwd and given PASSLENGTH=15. What i noticed is that when user changes the password next time, it will enforce the a 15 character password but during the next logon, it verifies only first 8... (5 Replies)

I want to store the passwords in a global file, so that all the users will not use them to login but a process should use it. One way is to keep the passwords in a .ini file and execute the file in the start of the script and use that variable.
