when I boot to the cdrom, how will I know where the /var and root file systems are. under dev/dsk/ there are 50 devices listed. sorry I just need to understand how it works.
When you are at the OK prompt, type printenv and look for "boot-device". This will tell you the device that root is on. Boot the cdrom and fsck the root device. Then you should be able to mount the root filesystem. Once you have done that, look at /etc/vfstab to find the other devices you may need to fsck.
